My Process

 

Research

To be able to design an effective site, app, product or platform, it is critical to understand who is using it and the problem that must be solved. I learn who the target audiences are and their demographics, needs, goals, motivations, concerns and paint points to create personas and scenarios. I learn the business problem and the business needs so those can be balanced with user needs. Redesign projects specifically involve looking at competitors and analytics and conducting usability audits and content audits and inventories to understand opportunities, current activity, and the scope of information to restructure.

Design

Once I understand the problem we are trying to solve and the users we are targeting, I create user journeys to document the pathways and connection points of the user groups and task flows to map out the steps users take to achieve their goals, incorporating the requirements that have been gathered. From there, I create sitemaps, navigation designs, wireframes, and eventually more high-fidelity designs in collaboration with UI designers. I also work in collaboration with Product, SEO, Content and Development teams throughout the process.

Test

To keep the user at the center of the process, it is ideal to test throughout to validate the choices made and then design iteratively based on the findings so that the user is always guiding the process. I work with recruitment teams to identify and screen users, design testing protocol and write scripts, synthesize findings and write reports. I conduct a variety of moderated and unmoderated qualitative and quantitative testing, including first click and tree testing, card sorting, guerilla testing, task analysis, interviews, A/B testing and surveys using a variety of user testing platforms.
